Terror of Texting

Texting is the way of communication in the 21st century. Portio Research concludes that over 16 billion messages are sent per minute worldwide meaning the good old days of picking up the phone and simply calling someone is a thing of the past. Texting was first introduced in 1992 as a way to be social and connect with others quickly.  When the concept first emerged, it was considered a luxury to have a cellular device that could send SMS messages; fast forward to 2016 and texting is a part of everyone’s daily lifestyle.

Texting has vast benefits such as quick communication, mobility, and an ability to maintain friendships and relationships. According to eWeek, 80% of people are using texting for business purposes. However, texting does pose a dangerous threat to companies if they use the tool improperly.

Though texting has proven to be a revolutionary tool that will most likely continue to dominate the way people communicate, there is a fine line between the etiquettes of social texting and business texting. Communication is vital when attempting to create and grow a successful business.  Whether it’s internal with your employees and co workers or external with your clientele, texting should be avoided at all costs.  The reasons behind the terror of texting:

  • Unclear Communication: Although texting is a great communication tool, sometimes the intended message behind the text can be misinterpreted.  When managing a business, it is important to consistently deliver a clear, concise message about employee tasks in order to generate the optimal outcome. Sending a text message on what needs to be achieved to employees, coworkers, and customers may create some ambiguity among each other on what exactly needs to get accomplished.  Generally, texting does not allow for lengthy messages; rather, texting is better used for delivering short, quick sentences or phrases.  Therefore, if one needs to explain something at length, an email or phone call will be much more effective as compared to a text.
  • Safety & Security:  Another issue that texting creates for a business is that text messages can easily be deleted from a phone and cannot be traced back like an email.  For instance, if you ask an employee to do a certain job for the day and they do not do it, they can simply delete the text from their phone and say, “I never received that text from you.”  Furthermore, due to a lack of service, messages may not always send or may not always be received.  Matters like these will create safety and security issues within your business. • The Power of Networking: Building a strong network is vital to any company and texting is not the proper way to construct it.  Texting is rather informal and creates the perception that you and your business communicate in a relaxed and generally unprofessional manner.  When first building your network, a phone call or formal email is much more  professional and shows you are serious about acquiring their relationship with your business community.

In general, texting has both  advantages and disadvantages, but when conducting a proper business, the disadvantages of texting outweigh the advantages.  However, if you like the concept of managing your business through your smartphone or cellular device there are softwares and platforms that allow you do so, such as Pulse 24/7, a revolutionary new platform that allows you to better manage and market your business.
